Frequently Asked Questions

What is hazardous area?

A hazardous area is defined as any place where there is a risk of explosion. The hazardous area is classified as Zone 0, Zone 1 or Zone 2 (for gas, vapor) or Zone 21 or Zone 22 for dusty atmospheres, depending on the level of risk.

What is Zone 1

Zone 1 is an area in which an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur occasionally in normal operation. It may exist because of repair, maintenance operations, or leakage.

What is Zone 2

Zone 2 is a place in which an explosive atmosphere is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for a short period only. These areas only become hazardous in case of an accident or some unusual operating condition.

ATEX and IECEx

The main difference between ATEX and IECEx is that ATEX certification only applies for countries in the EU while IECEx certification is accepted globally. Hence, the IECEx certification is more widely recognised and accepted compared to ATEX certification.

What does Explosion Proof mean?

Explosion-proof or flame-proof equipment is sealed and rugged, such that it will not ignite a hazardous atmosphere, despite any sparks or explosion within

What is Intrinsically Safe

Intrinsic safety, also called non-incendive, limits the energy present in a system, such that it is insufficient to ignite a hazardous atmosphere under any conditions. This includes low both power levels, and low stored energy.

Repair of explosion proof devices

For Ex certified devices that requires repair, the user is not allowed to open and repair as it will not only lose the manufacturer warranty but will also violate the standards and regulations. Equipment may only be opened and repaired by the manufacturer, certified persons or agencies.

What Industries requires Ex certified devices

Ex Certified devices are suitable for operation in sectors such as oil, gas, pharmaceuticals, energy, chemicals, surface coatings, volatile food ingredients, marine, aviation and other industries that deal with explosion risk.
